John C.: “He’s telling me, but I don’t know what he’s telling everybody.”

Merriman: “He’s a rat.”

John C.: “I guess that article in the paper about them digging up Scott [Porcho’s] house over there.”

Merriman: “Digging up Scott’s house?”

John C.: “Yeah, the backyard. You didn’t read about that?”

Merriman: “Uh-uh.”

John C.: “Yeah. It was in the paper. Larry came back and said the DA was using his own dog or something. I don’t fucking know what’s going on.”

Merriman: “Oh my God.”

John C.: “But it’s in the paper. They came out with it in the L.A. Times.”

Merriman: “In the L.A. Times?”

John C.: “Yeah. Scott and those guys were saying, hey, they dug up my backyard . . . You know him? You know Chris?”

Merriman: “Chris Bowen?”

John C.: “Yeah. ’Cause those guys talk all the time.”

Merriman: “Who, Larry and Chris?”

John C.: “Yeah, ’cause they’re in twelve and we’re in two.”

Merriman: “He’s supposed to be a rat.”

John C.: “That’s what I heard, too. But there’s no paperwork. So I don’t know.”

Merriman: “I read all his shit.”

John C.: “He and Larry kick it off. I mean, through the vent all the time.”

Merriman: “Why?”

John C.: “ ’Cause they’re buddies. [Larry says] if Mumbles would just admit to it, me and my cousin would walk.”

Merriman: “He said I’m gonna do whatever it takes to get out of here?”

John C.: “Yeah. He said he’s walking. That’s when [another prisoner named Mike] said, hey, Larry, you fuckin’ piece a . . . Hey, I don’t know. I haven’t seen the paperwork. But he had a big old fucking envelope he gave his lawyer to mail out. You know he goes to court a lot.”

Merriman: “Hey, he told you straight out like that?”

John C.: “Yeah, he was saying it through the vent . . .”

Merriman: “Why didn’t you pop him one?”

John C.: “ ’Cause I’m not ready to get a fucking strike for you guys, homes.”

Merriman: “Yeah, but he’s a rat. You ain’t gotta break his arm, just beat him up a little. Rough him up. Sock him up. And fuckin’ tell him to get the fuck out of here.”

John C.: “Tell him to move to another section?”

Merriman: “Sock him up first. Sock him in the eye a little.”

John C.: “He drives me . . . All he does is paperwork. Boom, boom, boom. From what I understand, he told. Everybody says they know it. Chris, Scott, all the guys. ’Cause I guess he wants, what do you call it . . . forgiveness.”

Merriman: “He wanted forgiveness?”

John C.: “Yeah, ’cause the way he looks at it, he didn’t do anything . . . so he thought he’d ask forgiveness of the family.”

Merriman: “Why the fuck did he say anything? Oh, man.”

John C.: “He keeps saying, ‘I didn’t do it.’ He’s like quote, unquote, ‘Justin would admit to it. Then me and my cousin could walk.’ ”

Merriman: “What did you do?”

John C.: “I just told him to shut up. I told him to shut his mouth. I don’t want any of this bullshit.”

Merriman: “Ahh, but come on, man.
